Good Search- support Boulder Pride just by searching or shopping online!

What if Boulder Pride earned a penny every time you searched the Internet?

Or how about if a percentage of every purchase you made online went to support our cause?

Well, now it can! (It's easy and doesn't cost you a thing!)

GoodSearch.com is a new Yahoo-powered search engine that donates half its advertising revenue, about a penny per search, to the charities its users designate. Use it just as you would any search engine, get quality search results from Yahoo, and watch the donations add up!

GoodShop.com is a new online shopping mall which donates up to 37 percent of each purchase to your favorite cause! Hundreds of great stores including Amazon, Target, Gap, Best Buy, ebay, Macy's and Barnes & Noble have teamed up with GoodShop and every time you place an order, you’ll be supporting your favorite cause.

Just go to www.goodsearch.com and be sure to enter Boulder Pride as the charity you want to support. And, be sure to spread the word!

Boulder Pride Annual Report

Boulder Pride is excited to share our 2007 annual report with our community. Download your copy here.

We are proud of what we were able to accomplish in 2007 and very grateful to the many volunteers, donors, and businesses who donate to make this possible. We expect 2008 to be an active year as we work to build our connections with the many local organizations working to make Boulder County a better place for all of us.

Boulder Pride Needs Volunteers!

There are so many opportunities to be of service to your community!  We could use help with things such as: distributing fliers and handbills for events; planning and executing events; day to day administrative work, etc.

Please get in touch if you are interested in volunteering! call:  303.499.5777 or email   Volunteer

Support Boulder Pride-and your donations will be matched!

California says YES to Discrimination

Tuesday night was full of raucous celebration tinged with disappointment for the LGBTIQ community, in California and across the country. Despite our best efforts, we did not succeed in halting the tide of anti-gay initiatives in the states seeking to pass them.

It is clear that while our country is ready to make strides in many areas, granting equal rights to its LGBTIQ citizens is still being used as a flash point to create division and fear.  I have hope that will change. I know the power we have discovered in our unity will continue to grow. Marriage equality is only one part of our fight, one battle on the road. The true goal is equal treatment under the law. Boulder Pride is part of a statewide network of LGBT Centers working to create that possibility together.

We want you to walk with us on that road. Volunteer. Donate.  We need your support as we work to create the world we want to live in. We have come so far in our struggle for equality, Colorado especially has much to celebrate, with your support we will go farther.

And today, we will celebrate how far we’ve come, knowing that it’s not as far as we will go.
Thank you,

Aicila Lewis

Executive Director

Boulder Pride

We were graciously awarded a grant that will be matched dollar for dollar, up to $5,000.00 for donations to Boulder Pride.

Help us by making a donation today for the first time or by increasing your level of giving!

Every donation is appreciated, no matter how small or large!

What would you do with an extra $10,000?

Here's what $10,000 does for Boulder Pride:

$10,000 allows Boulder Pride to operate the community center, providing a meeting place for support groups,

and a work place for Boulder Pride staff and volunteers for 6 months.

We hope you will donate today.

What would you do with an extra $5,000?

$5,000 allows Boulder Pride to develop a curriculum for the Workplace Equality Project;

A future Boulder Pride program that will reach out to businesses and their employees to educate them about

the LGBT community and empower their compliance with the Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA).

We need you to donate today.

If you don't have a spare $10,000 or $5,000, we hope you will donate what you can.

Right now, thanks to a generous grant from the Gill Foundation, every dollar we receive is matched, up to $5,000.

If everyone who receives this email gave only $10, we would have enough funding to run Boulder Pride's basic operation for 4 months.

Equality holds its value.

Join the new Boulder Pride GLBT Healthy Living Advisory Committee!

Do you believe health is a social justice issue?  Let Your Voice Be Heard

As part of Boulder Pride's mission we are committed to ensuring the health and well-being of GLBT persons in Boulder County. Members of the GLBT community face unique challenges when it comes to their health. GLBT people are disproportionately represented when it comes to a variety of serious illnesses—including some cancers, depression, and tobacco-related health problems. Through Boulder Pride's new Healthy Living initiative, we are committed to addressing health disparities affecting LGBT people in Boulder County.
Currently, Boulder Pride has an established Smoke Free GLBT program and is looking to expand its healthy living programming in 2009. We are relying on you to help us take leadership on addressing GLBT health disparities, and we really need your passion and participation!  Boulder Pride is inviting members of our community to serve on the new Boulder Pride Healthy Living Advisory Board! This Board will have a large voice in deciding what kinds of healthy living programming and services are developed for GLBT persons in Boulder County.

For more information and to join the advisory board, please call Kirsten at Boulder Pride, 303-499-5777 x2 or write Kirsten Spielman

Creating Change seeks Hosts for Community Housing

The National Gay and Lesbian Task Force will convene its 21st annual Creating Change Conference in Denver Jan. 28–Feb. 1, 2009. This is the GLBT movement's most important gathering, and it will draw together over 2,500 queer activists and their allies for networking, strategizing, grassroots organizing, skills building, leadership development, policy debates, inspirational speakers, and so much more. Day-long institutes, 90-minute and 3-hour workshops (over 200 to choose from!), plenary sessions, issue/identity-specific caucuses, receptions, entertainment, and parties will fill the calendar each day, from early morning until late night.

With 2,000+ like-minded activists Creating Change is empowering, energizing, educational, exhausting, inspiring, and absolutely wonderful! This is where activists go to "recharge their batteries." I strongly encourage you to attend this movement-building conference while the opportunity is right at our door step, in the Grand Hyatt downtown, 17th & Welton Streets.  If you would like more information, take a look at their website, www.creatingchange.org

An important commitment that Creating Change makes to the community is to reduce the cost of attendance by offering community housing.

This is where YOU come in.  If you are close to downtown, live near a major bus line or light rail station, or plan to attend the conference yourself, please consider offering a spare sofa or an extra bedroom to the conference in order for an activist to attend who might not be able to do so without this type of support. By the way, it's also a great way to make a new friend or two. NGLTF's national office in DC does the necessary screening and the matching of hosts to visitors.

To sign up as a host for community housing: please email Marta (in the DC office)

Call for Change- Support LGBT inmates

We are writing to ask you to consider becoming a signatory of Just Detention International’s Call for Change initiative, a set of policy recommendations that if implemented, would greatly improve conditions for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender (LGBT) inmates in detention.

Just Detention International (JDI) seeks to end sexual violence in all forms of detention. A recent study of 6 male prisons in the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR) found that 67% of “non-heterosexual” inmates had endured some form of sexual violence (Jenness, et al., UC Irvine, 2007). Transgender women are especially vulnerable to sexual assault in the male prisons where they are housed. We also find that gay men and lesbian women become targets of discrimination, harassment and violence in a penal system plagued with extreme homophobia.

Learn more about Colorado's ENDA

There is now a Colorado law that creates workplace equality for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender individuals? The passage of Employment Nondiscrimination Act (ENDA) in May 2007 is an excellent step forward in ensuring workplace equality for every person in the state of Colorado. The law makes it illegal to take sexual orientation or gender identity into consideration when making employment decisions. Help us spread the word, download this policy statement for your place of business and pass it on to your Human Resources manager. You can also print copies of this informational brochure and share it with others.  Learn more about Colorado's ENDA at the Gill Foundation website.

"Suddenly Last Winter" -- Italy, 2008
Written and Directed by:  Gustav Hofer and Luca Ragazzi
Gustav and Luca, 30-something residents of Rome, have been together for over eight years.  When the center-left coalition Italian government presents a draft law in 2006 that would give civil union-like rights to gay couples, short of marriage, Italy goes wild.  The outcry is so loud that Luca and Gustav set out with good humor to find out why everyone is so hysterical about honoring their love for each other.

"Freeheld: The Laurel Hester Story"  2007
Written and Directred by: Cynthia Wade (38 mins)
*** WINNER 2007 ACADEMY AWARD FOR BEST DOCUMENTARY SHORT SUBJECT ***
After serving 25 years as a highly decorated police officer in Ocean County, New Jersey, Detective Lieutenant Laurel Hester discovers she has stage 3 lung cancer and up to a year to live.  Her next discovery is that Ocean County's conservative "Freeholder" county officials do not permit domestic partners to inherit pensions.  Laurel and Stacy, supported by people from across the spectrum in their community, begin a campaign -- with a short time frame -- to win domestic partner benefits for county employees so that Stacy can receive Laurel's pension when she dies.

This week's guests are Victor J. Banis

Banis has written 150  books and his blojg is at http://thesweetflagmenlove.blogspot.com/.  In 1964, he was indicted on federal charges of conspiracy to distribute obscene material, this for his first novel, The Affairs of Gloria (Brandon House, 1964), which had no sexually explicit words or phrases, but did contain one "damn," and, more to the point, a couple of very tepid lesbian scenes. Clearly, in the early sixties, the U. S. Government thought that writing about or publishing books depicting homosexual behavior, male or female, was in and of itself obscene, and they meant to stamp it out. Banis was watched by the FBI and had his mail opened and telphone lines tapped.
"And, since those little blurbs mentioned above, some of them, at least, touch upon the subject, I suppose I ought to talk about my gay writing history.
I have no embarrassment in doing so, and my only reluctance is my reluctance to label myself a "gay writer," since in fact gay writing has been only a part of my literary output, and not the larger part. I think that I did sit down in the earliest days of my career to write gay novels (I think, because it was so very long ago), but I have long since ceased to think in terms of genre or subject matter or even style. I don't think today I can even correctly say I write "stories." I write people. They come to me and talk to me—often I literally hear them whispering in my ear—and they are who they are, and I don't get to dictate whether they are gay or straight or Martian, anymore than I would with the person next to me on an airplane. They tell me their stories, these visitors, and I think it would be presumptuous of me to try to tell them what their stories should be, or how they should be written, let alone that they must fit into some preconceived  "genre." So, just a writer, then, and not a "this writer" or "that writer."
On the other hand, if I have had an appreciable impact upon the world of books and writing, it is certainly in the genre of gay publishing, where I have become something of a cult figure over the years and a hero to some writers and critics.  Please join me as I interview this wonderful writer.

The Power of Us: Moving Beyond History to be held in San Francisco, CA, March 26-28, 2009 will mark NBJC's fifth anniversary. The passage of California Proposition 8 removes the fundamental right to marry for our gay and lesbian families and has revealed a troubling a potentially disabling racial divide within our movement and with too many of our African American allies. Black LGBT people have found ourselves caught in the middle—defending our right to full equality, acknowledging the continued challenges of homophobia and heterosexism within African American communities and the racial inequalities and bias within the LGBT movement.

We need your cooperation to move beyond this history and discover a unified way forward.

Where:  bside Lounge (2017 13th, Boulder, CO)

Please join us again at the b.side Lounge! Our first evening meeting on Oct. 7 was a lot of fun.  Food and drink sure help to elevate the spirits!  We had some great appetizers going around and plenty of drink options to choose from.  It was nice to mingle with other folks in a more relaxed atmosphere.  There was plenty of time for socializing too, which gave us the opportunity to get to know each other on a different level.  We did maintain our business intentions in spite of the festive atmoshpere; everyone gave their commercials and passed out cards and brochures.  It was also great fun to know that we were hosted in a lesbian-owned venue, and Betsy Workman, the owner, was very helpful and accommodating.  We had an entire section dedicated to PBN.  Please come to our second meeting and bring your promotional info to share with the group.  We are no longer "one representative per profession," so bring your colleagues and let's have a great night of networking.  The more businesses that participate, the better networking opportunities we have!

Cost:  Our group is free to visit.

featured artist:  Michelle Allen and the Slick Allen Trio Deeply influenced by Blues, Bluegrass, Folk, Alt-country, Acoustic Rock and Old Time roots music, most of the Slick Allen Trios music doesn't fit neatly into a musical category. A veteran of the front-range Bluegrass band Little Liza Jane, Michelle's original tunes continue a remarkable creative evolution establishing Allen as a musical icon in the front range area.  Although truly a sensitive singer-songwriter, the title fails to fully convey the depth of her songwriting or power of her soulful voice. Paired with Kevin Slick, on banjo, mandolin and guitar and Jay Allen on upright Bass, the trio combines the best of traditional roots with contemporary creativity.www.myspace.com/slickallentrio
